Henrik Schwarz’s !K7 imprint Between Buttons announced its second release, Aphorisms, following on from Works Piano, a neoclassical-electronic exploration from Schwarz himself. Embodying the diverse curatorial approach of the label, Aphorisms is a luscious, entrancing six-track debut LP from Syrian musicians Khaled Kurbeh and Raman Khalaf Ensemble.
Currently based in Berlin, Raman Khalaf and Khaled Kurbeh hail from Syria and root the music they have been making together since 2015 in their home country. Their sound is a confluence of Raman Khalaf’s lyrical oud playing and plaintive vocalisations with Khaled Kurbeh’s jazz and classical-influenced piano and synthesiser work. Their compositions straddle the acoustic – as displayed on the record – as well as the electronic, as showcased in their live performances. Such performances have taken place at Berlin’s experimental CTM festival, the BBC Arabic Festival in London, Potsdamer Tanztage dance festival, and the Nils Frahm-curated Piano Day at Funkhaus.
Aphorisms was written by Khaled and Raman and recorded with an ensemble of some of Berlin’s finest and most musically diverse instrumentalists. The ensemble have backgrounds that range from classical conservatoire training to virtuoso craft and include jazz bassist Tom Berkmann, djembe player Moussa Coulibaly, Syrian-German violinist Ashraf Kateb, jazz drummer Mathias Ruppnig and experimental percussionist Nora Thiele.
The record was composed over the last two years and blurs the line between written music and improvised playing,” says Raman. Khaled adds that, “the pieces articulate our reflections on different topics such as solitude, absurdism and despair, all set to a fictional musical narrative, hence the title Aphorisms.
Kurbeh and Khalaf’s creative vision extends to the artwork for Aphorisms also, which is a haunting abstract etching by artist Yaser Safi and which will be available as 10 limited edition prints made at the Berlin Weissensee School of Art. This finishing touch adds finesse to a remarkable debut record from this truly exciting new musical collective.
