Belocca – Subconscious (Kaiser Souzai Remix),taken from Subconscious EP,out December 10 on Ballroom Records
A fierce independent artist with a propensity for the unexpected, Belocca is a man quickly earning a reputation for himself among techno’s elite. If you’ve encountered his sound before you’ll understand exactly why. Pounding and relentless but always crafted with great flair, it calls on numerous sounds and styles, with his execution always impressively delivered. For his latest, the Hungarian producer perks up on Kaiser Souzai and Albird’s always on-point Ballroom label courtesy of a release that speaks volumes of all involved.
Though this release only features two tracks (one original and one remix by the aforementioned Souzai), it’s definitely one that’s embraced a quantity over quality approach. The title track is an immediately impressive cut, with it many meandering ways and generally unpredictable themes marking it out as a track of considerable distinction. Kicking off on a deep and relatively innocuous tip, it soon morphs into an altogether different beast. Classy and sophisticated, it’s the sound of the Hungarian at the top of his game — and gives us a fair indicator of why his music has been supported by techno royalty including Paco Osuna, Marco Carola and Richie Hawtin.
Kaiser Souzai’s remix duly closes out the release, and it does so in some fashion. A fitting albeit subtle interpretation, it cleverly keeps much of the spine of the original intact, with its catch-as-hell baseline still playing a key role. Proper techno that’s sure to prove a treat with the heads, Ballroom’s latest is magnificently easy on the ear.
