Jalen N’Gonda has premiered second single ‘Why I Try’, following the success of last year’s debut track ‘Holler (When You Call My Name)’. Already approaching 1 million streams, 2016 also saw Jalen open for the likes of Lauryn Hill, Jamie Woon and Laura Mvula (and be greeted by Martha Reeves with “you’re pretty young to be playing the blues like that”). An EP will follow this summer, in addition to further live plans.
‘Why I Try’ is an effortlessly-accomplished cut of contemporary soul, capturing the genre’s classic theme of being in love with someone who’s completely uninterested. Musically, too, ‘Why I Try’ is equal parts Motown as Merseyside, reflecting a love of Jackie Wilson, The Last Shadow Puppets, and the shared ground in-between.
With a full EP to follow this summer, and live shows in London and Geneva immediately selling out – The King’s Head, Servant’s Jazz Quarters – Jalen N’Gonda begins 2017 as one of the year’s most promising newcomers.
