Solomon Grey release soundtrack to new six BBC1 series ‘The Last Post’.

London duo Solomon Grey have just released their cinematic soundtrack to the upcoming BBC1 drama series ‘The Last Post’ available digitally today (Friday 29th September) with a physical release on Friday October 6th. The series which starts on Sunday 1st October at 9pm on BBC1, has been created by Peter Moffat (Criminal Justice, Silk, Undercover) and stars Jessica Raine, Jessie Buckley, Stephen Campbell Moore, Ben Miles and Jeremy Neumark-Jones. Set in the mid-sixties in Aden (Yemen) ‘The Last Post’ centres on the lives of a Royal Military Police unit and their families, in the last days of the British Empire.

The process of crafting the soundtrack for ‘The Last Post’ was an unusual one in that Solomon Grey (aka Joe Wilson and Tom Kingston) made frequent visits to the filming location in South Africa, writing and recording. Visits were in part driven by the fact that Joe (IMDb name Joe Kennedy) also appears as an actor in ‘The Last Post’, playing a pivotal role in the series as well as being half of Solomon Grey. In Joe’s own words;

Once filming began we were working closely with the sound recording team on set, using wild-tracks and anything that seemed to give us an interesting start-point for the music. We found these ‘field recordings’ so useful in creating a bespoke soundscape that was unique to this project and it was so much more fun working like that!

The resulting score features both electronic and classical orchestral instrumentation, creating a rich dystopian sonic landscape that befits the story. With the sixties in full swing at home, the characters live out their lives in a heavily-guarded military compound, as morals, social attitudes and traditional army roles are put to the test – all with a backdrop of constant threat and danger as the local insurgency gathers pace. This diverse tapestry provided further inspiration for the music, as Tom puts it:

The Last Post features such complex, interesting characters in a fascinating and unusual setting – it gave us a vivid landscape in which to create the music, accenting and counterpointing the stories and emotions of the actors on screen.

Constantly creating, Solomon Grey are a band but also a sonic brand, carving out a niche alongside other contemporary heavyweight composers such as Nils Frahm and Johan Johansson. Solomon Grey previously scored the 2015 BBC mini-series ‘The Casual Vacancy’ and will be releasing the follow-up to their critically acclaimed self- titled debut album ‘Solomon Grey’ in early 2018 on Mercury KX.
