The latest release from Velvet Pony Trax calls on a network of Stockholm friends and allies to roll out five tracks of unashamed house pleasure, mixing bittersweet emotion with glassy-eyed, discoteque optimism.
Opening the EP, Bella Boo follows up her recent debut LP over on Studio Barnhus with the deep and bumping number ‘Idrischön’, that blends funk and soul samples with a bracing organ effect, resulting in a joyous and nocturnal club heater. Label founder Art Alfie invites in relative newcomer Måns Glaeser for ‘Holiday Inn’, a warm-hearted and rolling funk and soul ode that gradually, wonderfully flourishes into a suddenly recognisable party-starter.
Alfie brings in another house comrade for the first track on the flip, reteaming for the first time since 2016 with his Karlovak partner in crime Mr. Tophat for ‘Flörtig Stämning’, a descending and memorable piano house number. Måns Glaeser then returns solo for the chugging ‘Flacid Spouse’, a smoky and atmospheric track defined by a haunting vocal sample atop an irresistible sample. Finally, Art Alfie comes back round once more to kiss off the record with ‘Oh Swell’, a perfectly-pitched and dancefloor-primed finale of heartbroken catharsis.
