London-via-Lincoln producer Courage has been carving a niche for himself in recent years as a purveyor of electronically inflicted pop and R&B tracks, collaborating most notably with BBC Sound of 2017 winner Ray BLK and young grime king Stormzy for 2016 breakout single ‘My Hood’. However, this success only tells half his story. After making headlines within the mainstream, Courage has returned to the club for a new release on pioneering UK label Rinse, ‘Songbirds’.
Displaying a departure from the sound of his previous club efforts, the release’s A-side reveals the producer in a much more house-focused state; with arpeggiated synths, full-bodied kicks and intense flutes providing a high adrenaline backdrop from the outset. The beat then gives way to late 90s club nostalgia as rhythmic tablas and an infectious vocal line are anchored by a low-slung bassline that rolls through the track, creating a groove that is as much at home reverberating between the walls of a packed main room as it will be filling festival tents this summer.
With the release of ‘Songbirds’ on Rinse, Courage widens his horizons; proving his artistic value extends way beyond supplying a tapestry for other artists and thrusting himself further into 2017’s new wave of UK club music elite.
