Christopher Ledger mints his label CL Series with the Cielo Intonato EP, a collaboration with Luigi Ranghino’s Trio.
A multidisciplinary artist based between Berlin and Rome, Ledger fuses a strong sense of emotion with technical prowess. His debut outing on CL Series sees him reach for a sound palette which draws just as much from the ambient and experimental music world as it does from visual arts. CL Series will serve primarily as a personal output for Ledger who will demonstrate his approach of examining the mutual interaction between two complementary artistic practices, where each influence the other simultaneously during the creative process.
Christopher explains: “In the past two years, I often found myself frustrated in the studio. Everything I produced sounded like something I’ve created previously. My reaction was always to get out of the studio and head to my art space to draw and paint. With time, I found myself putting on some of my favorite records and attempting to give my own visual representation of the sound. This led to ask myself – why shouldn’t I draw the sounds I’d like to hear instead of just representing something that already exists? The audible and visual worlds are obviously complementary and it’s not coincidental that the terminologies for both artforms overlap. Consequently the CL Series releases will be the result of a mutual interaction between two artistic practices, where each influence the other simultaneously during the creative process. I have to admit: the deeper I dove into this process, the more I learnt about myself as an artist and as a person.’’
The three cuts that constitute ‘Cielo Intonato’ are three extracts from a jam with Luigi Ranghino’s Trio. Ranghino is a regular studio collaborator of Max Loderbauer who has also performed live with the Ambiq trio featuring Ricardo Villalobos. Highlighting the interplay with its visual pendant, Ledger and the trio deliver elegant and masterful performances, all in shimmering drums, delicate keys and expressive woodwinds. Ion Ludwig completes the package with an 11 minute slow-burning remix.
“Cielo Intonato” is released exclusively on vinyl March 9th 2018.
