Mina Rose premieres video for ‘Lemons & Limes’, features on Tricky single

Mina Rose has premiered the striking video for acclaimed debut track ‘Lemons & Limes’, which is available today. She also features on the new single from longtime hero Tricky, ‘Running Wild’.

Diversity, community and creativity are central to everything Mina Rose does – from the culture-clash of sounds suggested through her early music to the South London block where Mina was first exposed to the possibilities of a life lived differently (whether through the neighbours, a father and uncle who occasionally produced House, a step-dad who played in local Ska bands, or the Roma ancestry on her mother’s side, which includes the famous ‘Queen of Kent Gypsies’ Urania Boswell Lee). Juggling her studies in Visual Arts & Design with teaching herself to make music online, Mina Rose began to translate her own experiences of London’s melting pot into writing songs which are as rooted in the paradoxes of present day city-living as they are conscious of history and hierarchy.

A window into this world-view is offered by the video to ‘Lemons & Limes’, a colourful yet cutting compound of trip-hop, dub, hip-hop and vivid contemporary pop. Whilst wider influences range from Outkast and Gorillaz to Gil Scott Heron, ‘Lemon & Limes’ was particularly inspired by reggae legend Smiley Culture, observing this lack of change in the relationships between the police and the youth. “Lemons and Limes is about feeling that we are moving away from the inclusion that Smiley Culture was talking about in tracks like ‘Cockney Translation,” Mina says now. “I feel that there are forgotten people and creations that have come from the heart of London that people are now unaware of which can remind us of the beauty of a multicultural society.
