‘Spellbound’, the 1998 Rae & Christian modern soul favourite carried by Veba’s unforgettable vocals, returns in with a completely different vibe thanks to very young French remixer Yves Schopin. Impressively and respectfully, Yves has flipped this much loved cut from Rae & Christian’s classic ‘Northern Sulphuric Soul’ album into a smooth, laid back modern groove perfect for sun-downers and soulful dance floors alike. Yves, just sixteen and quietly tucked away in Amiens, works with a mix of instinct, inherited artistry and a reluctance to explain any of it, drawing on the philosophical pull of Arthur Schopenhauer on one side of his family and the musical finesse of Frederic Chopin on the other. His rework doesn’t chase attention, it simply reshapes ‘Spellbound’ into something elegant, fresh and indeed quite exquisite.
