Barry Can’t Swim shares new single “Kimbara”

Barry Can’t Swim shares “Kimbara”, his first new music since his acclaimed debut album ‘When Will We Land?’, released October 2023 on Ninja Tune. In trademark Barry Can’t Swim fashion, “Kimbara” is an undeniably catchy, club ready single – a guaranteed summer anthem drenched in lively horns, infectious vocal samples and joyful energy that builds up into a moment of rapturous euphoria.

The single arrives hot on the heels of a momentous few months for Barry with stand-out performances at this year’s Coachella festival, a sold-out live tour across the UK including a stop at London’s Roundhouse (which sold out in less than an hour and had over 15k people on the waiting list), a recent sold-out North American DJ tour which included B2B’s DJ sets with label mates Bonobo and salute, plus a Rolling Stone UK cover feature as part of their ‘Future of Music’ coverage.

Already a firm fan-favourite in Barry’s lauded DJ sets “Kimbara” is the Edinburgh-born musician’s first new music of 2024 and hints at further releases coming later in the year. Alongside huge touring plans with stops at some of the world’s biggest festivals including Primavera, Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Barry will soon be announcing massive UK headline shows.

On “Kimbara” Barry samples legendary, multi GRAMMY award-winning Cuban artist Celia Cruz – who collaborated with the likes of Aretha Franklin and acted alongside Antonio Banderas – on her 1974 single “Quimbara”. He pays homage to this iconic salsa recording, although having no direct translation, “Quimbara” is believed to mean similar to ‘having a good time’ and ‘enjoying yourself’, synonymous with Barry’s upbeat music and something which struck a chord with the producer.

One of the most exciting artists in electronic music Barry Can’t Swim first caught attention with a series of releases in 2020, before signing to Ninja Tune imprint Technicolour for his sensational 2022 EP ‘More Content’ (which has amassed over 20 million streams to date) and ‘Amor Fati’ (35 million to date). In 2023 Barry’s debut album ‘When Will We Land?’ – which landed a top 12 UK album chart position and number 1 in the Dance album charts upon release – marked his broadest and most diverse project yet. Voted as Radio 1’s Dance Album of the Year the 11-track project moved from deep house to jazz and received endless praise from the likes of Mixmag, DJ Mag, The Times, Evening Standard, NME, Billboard, Clash and many more. Barry was also awarded Breakthrough Producer at the DJ Mag Awards and nominated at the BRIT Awards 2024 in the Dance Act category against Becky Hill, Calvin Harris, Fred Again.. and Romy.
