Wretla to release Im Wald EP on all my thoughts

For Wretla, moving from Melbourne to Berlin felt like entering into a new level of a computer game – the next disc, loaded and spinning. Confronting a muddled feeling of dislocation, risk and possibility is the fundamental theme of Please Insert Disc 2, a five-track EP that funnels disorientation and the surreal comfort of surrender into a living breathing life form.

The EP maps his journey through the unknown. “Horizon” carries the promise of new beginnings, filled with the optimism of starting fresh in a new city. But the hope soon fractures: “You Are Surely Lost” drifts into disorientation, echoing Wretla’s own sense of being adrift, untethered from community and financial security. “Well, We Can’t Go Back Now” acknowledges the point of no return with surprising calm, embracing uncertainty rather than resisting it. “Let Me Go” closes the record with acceptance – a final release of control, framed by the realisation that fate is not something to fight, but something to flow with.

I thought I could fight fate but it only highlighted the illusion of control I thought I had over my life. I’m merely an observer and a conduit and… I am ok with that.”

Each track was designed as a living system. Written in Bitwig, the pieces incorporate layers of modulation, randomisation and field recordings that make every render slightly different. Australian bush sounds recorded before the move slowly give way to recordings made in Germany, tracing both a geographic and emotional transition. The result is a collection of five tracks that feels alive, pulsing, and unpredictable: an ecosystem in constant flux.
