Spettro – Ruta 05 (incl. Barbuto remix) on Lucidflow

Edward Scott, better known as Spettro, is the latest artist to make an appearance on the Lucidflow catalogue. His credentials are impressive with productions appearing on labels such as Get Physical Music and Elevate, finding their way into the boxes of several scene leading names such as John Digweed, Pig & Dan, Carl Cox, Tiefschwarz and Jay Tripwire. As you can tell from that list of tastemakers, his style is intensely visceral and tangible, geared to simultaneously work a festival and darkened basement alike.
The ‘Ruta 05’ EP leads off with no need for a warm up, with the title track heading straight into muscly beats and its main motif is to work an ever evolving arpeggio. It’s less about the melody and more about the intensity in increasing resonance.
‘Cuatros Caminos’ is another dark monster solely angled at the dancefloor. Rather than bring a kick drum pummelling to the floor, it’s all about the menace through the low bass rumble and distant tinkle that is like the fall of Space Invader projectiles. Teamed with this is the Barbuto remix, which is a tribal tumbler of a reworking. Natural bongos, driving beats, and one of those syncopated stabs that is more alarm call than melody. Everything goes into the mix and spins out as a full intensity driving track.
‘Insurgentes’ ties of the release and does so in quite some style. There is a delightful mix going on here – a little dash of tribal tech, a pinch of dub, a few handfuls of weighty 808 electro kicks. It’s subtle but is definitely one of those tracks that will spring into life weaving its way throughout a set.
The ‘Ruta 05’ EP comes out on 13th November from the usual digital outlets.
