Junior Sanchez “Hit It” – video inspired by Ernie Barnes’ painting “Sugar Shack”, featured as the cover art for Marvin Gaye’s classic album ‘I Want You)’

Prolific US producer Junior Sanchez returns to Defected with ‘Hit It’, featuring LA-based artist and recent Moodymann collaborator NEZ. With Sanchez’s music heavily influenced by the underground house scene of NYC that brings together marginalized communities, synthesizing Latin rhythms with heavy four-on-the-floor beats, ‘Hit It’ is a perfect demonstration of this sonic aesthetic. At its peak this dancefloor cut becomes busy in the best possible way, bursting with energy thanks to Sanchez’s dense production and NEZ’s dynamic vocals.

“Hit it” was created to touch on those classic New York / Chicago House and of course, those soulful Detroit Techno vibes, where it meets in the middle as if Masters at Work had a jam session with Carl Craig with inevitable modern twists and turns, and add Chicago’s young hero Nez’s unique style of rapping. He’s one of my favorite young artists at the moment pushing the boundaries of House Music in our scene. The record is a snapshot of what was, what’s now & what’s tomorrow!”, Sanchez says.

The song’s visually stunning video was created using cutting-edge AI technology, and was inspired by the art of renowned black artist Ernie Barnes’ painting “Sugar Shack”, famously featured as the cover art for Marvin Gaye’s classic album I Want You).

In the words of video director, Jamel Rankins, “As a black artist coming of age in the 80s and 90s, I was deeply inspired by the iconic artwork of Ernie Barnes, particularly his painting “The Sugar Shack” featured in the end credits of the classic TV show Good Times. This imagery had a big impact on both myself and Junior growing up on the East Coast of the US. With this spirit in mind, I aimed to create something visually unique, rooted in the culture, and in line with the vibe of the track – the vibe of house music. To achieve this, I used a blend of traditional design, illustration, and editing techniques, as well as cutting-edge AI systems, to create a funky, fun, and original visual experience.
