British electronic music pioneer Dave Angel returns to R&S Records with A Time And Place, his first full-length album for the seminal Belgian label. Arriving 35 years after he first joined the R&S family, the album reunites one of UK techno’s defining voices with the label that helped launch his career.
The relationship began in 1991, when R&S founder Renaat Vandepapeliere discovered Angel’s Rolling Thunder project and invited him to Belgium. The landmark 1st Voyage EP followed, establishing Angel as one of British techno’s distinctive new voices. Releases including Stairway To Heaven, 3rd Voyage and appearances on the influential In Order To Dance compilation series cemented a partnership that helped shape both Angel’s career and the evolution of UK techno.
Thirty-five years later, A Time And Place feels less like a return than a continuation. Across 15 compositions, Angel draws on techno, jazz, soul, improvisation and richly textured electronic production, creating his most personal and expansive statement to date. Themes of family, heritage, nature and community run throughout an album that balances rhythmic precision with warmth, melody and emotional depth.
The record features celebrated trumpeter Steve Waterman on Réflexion and The Yellow Butterfly, legendary Chicago vocalist Robert Owens on Harmony Serenade, alongside guitarist Merv Carswell and vocalist Aurii Sky, Angel’s daughter.
While Angel’s influence on British electronic music is firmly established, A Time And Place reveals the broader musical foundations behind his work. Raised in a household immersed in live music and jazz culture, he has spent a lifetime absorbing sounds beyond the club, allowing them to shape a career defined by curiosity and experimentation.
Thirty five years after 1st Voyage first announced his arrival, A Time And Place brings Angel and R&S together once again, renewing one of electronic music’s enduring creative partnerships.
