Actress (Darren Cunningham) returns with a new single “Push Power ( a 1 )”. Released today on Ninja Tune it marks the acclaimed electronic artist’s first solo music since 2022’s mesmerising ‘Dummy Corporation’, which placed Actress firmly back in the centre of underground club culture. Prior to that the 2020 album ‘Karma & Desire’ which saw guest collaborations from Mercury Prize winner Sampha, Zsela and Aura T-09. The Guardian commented the album “cements his place as one of the great poets of club culture”.
Avant-garde-influenced “Push Power ( a 1 )” mirrors an intricate game of chess. With each thoughtful move the game grows and develops over time – something we can hear reflected in the textured and delicate layers of the track. “( a 1 ) The first move” comments Darren.
“Push Power ( a 1 )” hints at a bigger project on the horizon for Darren and arrives ahead of a live performance at Field Day in London, one of his largest live shows this year. Actress will be showing ‘Grey Interiors’ – an A/V project in collaboration with experimental creative studio Actual Objects who’ve worked with the likes of ShyGirl, Kali Uchis, LSDXOXO and have showcased at Coachella and 180 The Strand’s Futureshock exhibition.
Earlier this year Actress also performed at the iconic IICON stage after Four Tet at this year’s Glastonbury festival where he premiered “Push Power ( a 1 )” for its first ever play. Actress recently announced that he will be playing alongside Autechre in Australia across selected dates later this year.
Over the past few years Actress has featured in a Patta and Nike produced 4 part film by Mahaneela and Steve McQueen and remixed tracks for Joji, Perfume Genius, Tirzah, The Cinematic Orchestra, Soccer Mommy and Carmen Villain. 2020’s ‘Karma & Desire’ album was widely praised across the board, with praise from Pitchfork (included in their 41 Most Anticipated Albums of Fall 2020), FADER, Resident Advisor, Crack, Hypebeast and Consequence of Sound. Returning with his first album in 7 years, the legendary John Cale recently invited Actress to join him on his track “MARILYN MONROE’S LEGS (beauty elsewhere)”.
