On February 6th the Brussels-based electronic musician and Tresor resident Killian Vaissade, aka UFO95, presents his latest album. ‘A Brutalist Dystopian Society’ melds cutting-edge production, concrete monuments to a bygone era, and retro radiophonics, into a sharply vivid, powerful whole.
In the present day, brutalist architecture represents an unfulfilled utopian ideal, but these buildings remain aesthetic classics, starkly alluring and powerful in their monolithic presence. This inspired the young Frenchman to mirror their physical essence, as “functional, imposing and tough. I’m drawn to the minimalism, the weight, and the darkness it carries”, he comments. “I tried to translate this aesthetic into sound – something dark, dramatic, and stripped-back to the essentials”.
As well as reflecting on society’s loss of faith in the architecture’s failed promise of a better life, UFO95 uses the album to address brutality in general; tapping into techno’s ‘party-for-your-right-to-fight’ protest music essence, dismayed, as many people are, with “war, repression corruption and prejudice”.
At the same time, the album radiates the excitement and adventure of a high-octane nocturnal zoom through a cityscape, with a high-focus, 3D-wraparound immersion that’s as engrossing for home listening as it is for the club. Flooring the accelerator on his techno Tardis, Vaissade hurtles through thunderous throb, rolling funk, atomic age voltage, low-end saturation, hypnotic tension, moody bangers, and interlocking grooves.
A leading new light, UFO95 has gained renown as a masterful producer, whose tracks shine through in the densely populated world of club-focused techno, gaining releases on Tresor, WSNWG, Mord, and TSSRCT, which he runs alongside Hadone.
Purely a musician, Vaissade doesn’t DJ, instead opting to perform electrifying improvised live sets. This has resulted in a residency at the storied Berlin club Tresor, and gigs at Berghain, Berlin Atonal, Bassiani, Basement NY, and an 8 hour live jam at Stone Techno festival, with Rodhad’s WSNWG crew.
