Apparel Music sub-label Apparel Tronic returns this May with a new long player from Russian duo SCSI-9, pencilled for a double 12’’ release early May with a digital release to follow later in the month.
Comprised of Anton Kubikov and Maxim Milutenko, SCSI-9 have been releasing their take on raw and emotive electronic music since the turn of the millennium, their output finding a home on highly respected imprints such a Kompakt, Tyrant, Trapez and of course Apparel Music where they return to here on sub-label Apparel Tronic for their latest long player.
As expected the ‘Squares and Circles’ LP retains all of the magical intricacies expected from such acclaimed sonic explorers, the duo traverse through intertwining, ethereal melodies and robust rhythms throughout. From the hazy atmospherics of opener ‘No Rush’, ‘You & Me’ and ‘Stairs & Stars’ through to more heady acid-tinged cuts like ‘Get Some LFO’ and ‘303 Views’, the pair deliver smooth and dynamic cuts working as well on a dance floor as they do in your home.
The pair also explore more refined and stripped-back styles in cuts like ‘Onigiri’ with its heavily swung drums and synthetic twists and turns, while ‘Pha In The Hau’ lays down a pure deep house aesthetic and ‘Systematic’ veers into a melodious electronica vibe. All in all ‘Squares and Circles’ stands as yet another classy and accomplished addition to SCSI-9’s already impressive back-catalogue.
