Djrum returns with the new EP I Wander, following a sold out performance at the Barbican and the release of his critically lauded 2025 album Under Tangled Silence.
Sustaining the momentum of his most ambitious and acclaimed album to date, I Wander draws on a singular sound palette that Djrum has made his own in recent years. Refined by his bold, wide-ranging explorations as a pioneering DJ-producer and virtuosic multi-instrumentalist, I Wander represents the next step in a revelatory streak of material. For Djrum, the release explores the fertile space between different compositional forms: “What’s the difference between a song, a track, a work, a piece? I am interested in playing with these distinctions”.
Intended as “a single work, spread across several tracks” , the EP distills his signature, free-flowing sound into a concise, exceptional release. Arranged for continuous playback, Djrum describes the EP as a multifaceted work which reveals different dimensions according to the listener: “I Wander can be digested in bitesize chunks, or taken as a whole. Each track tells a different story on their own, but taken as a whole, a different narrative is revealed.”
Opening with deep low end rhythms, the EP moves through surreal reverberations, piercing glitch signals, and android-like mantras at the outset. The action develops, becoming masterfully intensified with hyperkinetic drum programming and frenzied snatches of jungle and breaks. Frenetic percussion then transitions into gentle piano intonations, before the EP surges into Aphexian breakbeat swarming with complex detail and propulsive energy. As we’re taken into the closing moments, a serene mood takes hold, with delicate ambient drift and minimalist strings taking us home.
As ever with Djrum’s work, finely calibrated electronics are beautifully balanced with sumptuous acoustic instrumentation, as interlocking rhythms, rapid-fire samples and cascading FX combine with impressionistic piano and rich cello movements. Moving between the fractured delirium of experimental electronic music and a graceful, introspective space of post-classical musicality, Djrum follows a landmark album with a forward-looking EP that renews and sharpens his precision-built, polyphonic sound. I Wander is an astonishing, leading edge soundworld from a remarkable, restless artist at the top of his game.
