British-Bengali artist Tara Lily finds catharsis on ‘Break The Motion’, a single that marks her first new material since her collaboration with King Krule. Blending live instrumentation with fractured electronics, expansive jazz influences, and alternative R&B, the track finds Tara bringing her craft into darker, more visceral territory, where emotional intensity meets cinematic scale.
“‘Break The Motion’ is about reckoning with your inner storm, self-destruction, and riding the cycles of chaos,” Tara explains.
Originally written on synth, Tara developed the track alongside longtime collaborator Dom Valentino – first crafting a heavy breakbeat as a placeholder before reimagining those rhythms with live drums at its core. The result captures a delicate balance between restraint and release. “Across this whole record, we’ve tried to work more on recording live musicians alongside ourselves to create a unique sound
from the source,” says Tara.
Accompanying the single is a visual performance shot inside an empty Royal Albert Hall at 5am. Following her previous show supporting RAYE at the venue and a performance at the Purcell Room, Tara was invited back into the iconic auditorium. Filmed high up in the hall’s circular Gallery, the band performs bathed in warm lamplight. Directed by Temi Adegbayibi, the video was captured on Super 8 film in a single, uninterrupted take featuring Tara alongside her full live band.
The single follows a period of deliberate retreat. After releasing her critically acclaimed debut album, Speak In The Dark, the collaboration with King Krule on Quiet Nights (Early Takes) EP and her first UK and EU tour, Tara stepped back from the spotlight to spend time writing and shaping new material between London and Hastings. That stretch of relative stillness has sparked work that feels simultaneously intimate and expansive – drawing together her jazz roots, electronic experimentation, and instinctive songwriting into something raw, immediate, and deeply human.
Growing up in Peckham as part of a British Bengali family has given Tara Lily a unique perspective on music and global culture. She has spent her life absorbing a multitude of sounds and genres from her surroundings, ranging from electronica to jazz and R’n’B to traditional Bengali folk music. From training at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, where she studied jazz piano and voice, to learning Indian classical music.
With a headline performance at Jazz on Wick in London on Saturday 5th September, alongside an appearance at We Out Here Festival on Sunday 23rd August, Tara Lily brings ‘Break The Motion’ into the live space this summer. She’ll be heading to New York for a performance at Elsewhere on Tuesday 22nd September, supporting Alabaster DePlume, before further international dates in Australia.
