Over the last 12 months Scuba (aka Paul Rose) has taken time out from the grind of touring to rest his body and mind. This period has corresponded with one of his most fertile cycles in the studio, revelling in the enjoyment of music creation across a wide spectrum of sounds, while experimenting with recording techniques. A marked difference from his most recent Scuba originals, ‘Expectations’ signals a contrasting path for sonic exploration.
The title track is a buoyant pastiche of bumping house grooves, rave stabs, soulful vox and garage undertones that poses a pointed question. ‘Voices’ is a study in darkness and light, as modulated tech funk wiggles and grooves its way along before Rose’s own rich harmonising vocal enters the space. ‘Burn Out’ is a silky composition driven by organic drums and a warm acoustic riff played by Rose, and fits just as much with a home listening setting, as a late-night club moment.
‘Expectations’ marks the beginning of a collaboration with Lando from Decadence Comics. The artist will create a series of images for Scuba releases moving forward, after an approach from Rose, who is a long-time fan of his work.
