Expanded is the first full-length solo album from Glasgow-born, London-based producer and Body Hammer resident Scott Fraser. Written over 25 years across various studio spaces in both cities, the album is the culmination of a decades-spanning journey and a letter of devotion to the records and the community that have been the backbone to his journey as a DJ.
This is a deeply personal offering, created with attention and care through from the writing of the material to the presentation of the record with hand stencilled artwork. Sonically, Expanded is marked by subtleties and refinement in its often dirgy aesthetic, it’s laden with intricacies in its details but with a deft and minimal touch. Influence comes from the womb-like pulsations of classic Basic Channel and the warmth and experimentation of early Detroit and UR records. The tracks themselves all began as concepts, taking inspiration from moving images and film or particular records and developed over the years in parallel with the building of Fraser’s technical nous with hardware.
The tracks have all been touched in most of the studios Fraser worked in, from Scrutton Street, Hackney Wick and various spots in Tottenham, many of these years neighbouring with close friend and mentor Andrew Weatherall. Though the music was recorded over such a long stretch of time the sound is cohesive and pegged together by the classic analogue drum machine, the Roland 606.
Underpinning the record that moves between dirge, ambient, trip hop, electro, Chicago house and techno this is an album made by a DJ who has been on the ground, in basements and has a feel for what sounds good, feels good and has deep sense of the human-ness of it all.
Rooted in the Glasgow world of event promotion, then moving down to London in the late 2000’s Fraser took up co-running much loved night Body Hammer alongside Joe Hart – DIY in ethos, resident focused and housed at off-the-beaten track venues, now in its 17th year it’s a party founded on music, intimacy and community. He’s also been an on-and-off Rinse FM resident over the last decade, played clubs across London and the globe including FOLD, The Cause, Fabric, Corsica Studios, Club 69, The Sub Club, Berkeley Suite, The Arches, Panorama Bar, Drugstore, 20/44, The Bunker, Good Room and the much missed Electric Pickle. He was also resident at much loved but sadly closed music pub The Gun.
While this is Fraser’s first solo album release he has a back catalogue of solo and collab EPs under his belt. He’s also part of Louise Quinn’s Gates of Light project, their second album Gates of Light II reached number 14 in the official UK Album chart, 3 in the Scottish album chart and 12 in UK indie chart in 2025.
The vinyl edition will be released on limited edition of 300 red vinyl, 30 coming with a limited edition screen print designed by Timothy Saccenti, Nicholas Martin and Scott Fraser, hand screen printed by Niall Greeves at Newbridge Print studios in Newcastle. Brown kraft sleeves individually hand stencilled and numbered by the artist, inserts feature a collection of moments and images from the last 25 years – the studio, the equipment and people that were part of the creative community that incubated this release. Japanese rice paper inner sleeves.
