Anna Morgan and Bell Curve curate 16 tracks from a diverse global lineup representing the future of bass and breaks. Over the last six years, Bell Curve and Anna Morgan’s Worst Behavior Recs label has been championing the most exciting producers coming out of the bass underground around the world. Worst Behavior, Vol. 4 is the last installment of their Worst Behavior compilation series and it’s truly a global affair, uniting producers from Amman, Moscow, Bristol, NYC, Los Angeles, Austin, and beyond over 16 tracks that show the excitement and kinetic energy of soundsystem music and culture.
Since the dawn of Worst Behavior in fall 2017, the label has championed 160bpm heaters and you’ll find those represented prominently on this collection, with producers turning in tracks purpose-built for the label. West Country legend Addison Groove presents a hard jackin’ juke/jungle workout that mixes classic electro grooves with loopy acid squelches, while Moscow Legend flips the stuttered vocals and demanding bass stabs of his 2020 underground anthem “Tek Dis!” for a faster tempo.
Going in a dreamier direction, FreshtillDef brings the Texas heat on the totally addictive track “AIWIY,” with its melancholy vocal chops, syrup-soaked bass synths, and footwork-ready percs. Fellow Texan Sharawi teams up with Arizona-based NIKES for a loopy spiral of jungle breaks with spooky Metalheadz sounds and a dark baile energy on “Diggity,” while L.A.’s Yunna, who just released her debut EP Rinne on the label, returns with the lush ambient jungle banger “She’s Gone Low.” The bi-coastal linkup of Doctor Jeep and Farsight produces a deep drummy workout of sonar sounds, crisp breaks, and booty-rattling sub bass.
As always on the Worst Behavior compilations, dope percussion is a major focus. Hypnotic Middle Eastern percussion riffs punctuate “Gasab Sokkar,” a snaking techstep drum ‘n’ bass-inspired roller from Jordanian producer Toumba. Prolific UK superstar Samurai Breaks explores the fusion of baile funk rhythms with wobbly dubstep bass on “Oshee,” while L.A. heads KOROStyle and Justin Jay find out what happens when UK garage’s skippy drum patterns meet punishing square- wave grime bass.
Worst Behavior Vol. 4 rounds off with a whole heap of breakbeats at different moods and tempos, just as Anna Morgan and Bell Curve like it. Oakland favorite bastiengoat goes for an R&B-meets-rave anthem, Whys delivers punishing amen jungle pressure on “Threat Kick” and A-0 pursues the smoked-out rollers route on “Iced Out.” Slowing down the tempo, dubstep/grime heads Amadeo and Hypho get locked into tough electro rhythms on “Jefferson Park” while Czechoslovakian producer fodie j. Invests in eclectic drum machine funk on “Le Track.”
Rounding things pff, label co-founder Anna Morgan teams up with Kool Karlo for “Pop That,” a modern Baltimore club and ghettotech- inspired beat guaranteed to detonate your dancefloor, and rising Leeds star TROPHY pops in with a Bandcamp exclusive “Hush Your Mouth,” an addictive juke/jungle workout that you definitely don’t want to miss.
Vol. 4 of the series again establishes the Worst Behavior crew’s curatorial talents, as they connect the dots between the bass-loving underground worldwide. Forward-thinking, high-quality, and fun, these tracks represent the future of soundsystem music and culture
