Based in Lisbon, Jorge Caiado has played a vital role across an emerging electronic scene in Lisbon. Operating as a record shop and label owner, a DJ, and a radio host, his superior yet ever-expanding musical knowledge gives over to three variations of timeless house on his latest EP for his own Groovement imprint, bolstered by a remix from founding father of techno, Mike Huckaby.
The initial version of ‘Cycles’ is a deep trip that expands into a playful, acidic number that oscillates in all the right directions, never losing its sense of balance between a woozy trip and 303 freakout. Huckaby’s reinterpretation deepens the mood still, offering a restrained build that oozes atmosphere and pays off with both sophistication and more than hint of bubbling euphoria.
Caiado then returns to the fold with a dub mix that brings out the introspection in the track’s chords, as if inspecting vintage Detroit soul under the beating, balearic sun of Lisbon itself. Finally, the ‘Acid Tool’ mix veers into the opposite, alternate direction, laying out Caiado’s masterfully handled machine work in raw form, accompanied with perfectly executed but minimalist jacking claps, keeping things rolling and rhythmic.
