Long since transcending neoclassicism and deeply immersed in electronic music, Martin Kohlstedt stands as one of the rare global artists who intuitively merge influences from vastly different worlds into a coherent, breathing organism. With one ear tuned to cinematic soundtracks and a hand in symphonic forms fractured by synthesis and held together by improvisation, Kohlstedt’s work unfolds across a wide spectrum – as a spectacular festival performance, an introspective piano concert, a multidimensional film score, or an immersive album
experience.

Modern Classical
Kluft, the German composer’s seventh studio album, embodies precisely such an experience. Never before has Kohlstedt come closer to the song form and to concrete composition. From the modular principles of his previous works, a new, almost magical world has emerged. Kluft carries within it a profound melancholy, paired with a sense of wonder and a rare fusion of compositional precision with an intuitive feel for melody and narrative flow. With a finely balanced sonic aesthetic, Kohlstedt redefines what modern classical can be.
Kluft
In German, Kluft denotes not only the space between rock formations but also a deep and sharply drawn divide between things or people – and thus the undefined, liminal spaces in between, the non-places. A deliberately chosen title: it is precisely these thresholds and chasms that Kohlstedt seeks out and fills with sound. Tracks suspended between states of matter. Tipping points where motion begins. Transformations in perpetual loop. Transitions that leave it unclear whether they mark an arrival or a departure. The moment the mind shifts from conscious to subconscious. Pads without before or after. Kluft can be heard as a descent – or surrender – into those canyons. Its elaborate and meticulously detailed production sets new standards for how electronic, acoustic, and analog elements can coalesce into an album that achieves a rare harmony between sound aesthetics and substance.
Essence & Substance
If one were to ask what humanity has to offer in response to artificial intelligence, an album like Kluft might well serve as the answer. Kohlstedt himself would never call his music political – and yet, it is inherently so. Because it connects worlds and people long divided by everyday life. Against the backdrop of a fragmented world of bubbles and algorithms, of wars and division, an album like Kluft – music like this – represents one of the few remaining forces of connection we still share, regardless of genre or label.
