Jamie Woon returns with two new tracks: ‘Heavy Going’ & ‘A Velvet Rope’

After a notable time away from the public sphere, Jamie Woon returns today with not one, but two pieces of new music that promise to remind us of his cellular and innate talent.

Led by the spatial warmth of ‘Heavy Going’, Jamie’s return to the fold marks the beginning of a new chapter. A modern soul classic brimming with emotion and reminding us of his much-missed honeyed vocals. With this new music he opens up more honestly about his emotional journey; his thought processes, his complex relationship with creating and his battles of justifying exposing his inner-psyche through music.

On ‘Heavy Going’, Jamie reflects, “Sometimes the most honest thing you can say is ‘I don’t know.’ This song comes from a place of trying to work out how to live your life while you’re still living it. Looking back, it’s a bit like 4 different parts of me all getting a shot at taking the driving seat for a bit – the anxious one, the hustler, the one who wants to check out and the one who dreams of utopia.

Recorded in London, ‘Heavy Going’ was produced by Jamie and Grammy award winning producer Martin Terefe, alongside Dan See (drums) and Dave Okumu (guitar).

The single is backed by another new track ‘A Velvet Rope’. Co-written with Holly Walker and Terefe it’s another heart-felt, soulful composition with overlaid crisp vocals and intricate production complete with Woon’s signature electronic edge.

In anticipation of this brave new world of releasing music again, Jamie has started his own Substack; a platform to share his thoughts and musings as he steps his toe back into the front-facing side of industry (only on his own terms, naturally). You can get further insight into his thought process in the first penned piece linked here.

Originally signed to Polydor/PMR, Jamie Woon released his seminal debut album Mirrorwriting in 2011. An album that catapulted him into the limelight with shock and awe. Lauded as one of the best debuts of its time, the debut featured ‘Night Air’, as co-produced by Burial. Jamie struggled to measure its impact both personally and professionally. Having consciously retracted from the media’s gaze for a while, Jamie released his second album, Making Time in 2015 which featured the single ‘Sharpness’.
